Ask her what she ripped from the very heavens.
And then ask her if she cares.
The Plot, Characters and Story Progression
Dawn of the Cursed Queen was unfortunately my least favourite so far. It was just giving “second book syndrome” despite being the third book in the series. A lot of it felt slow and most likely build-up for the upcoming fourth book. Due to that fact I felt bored for a lot of it. A lot of the new characters fell a bit flat and didn’t serve a whole lot throughout. I couldn’t feel attached to them in any way or relate to them much. I kind of felt like I kept going waiting for the heart wrenching gut punch that never came?
Dianna and Samkiel didn’t get much growth in their individuality but as a couple they face turmoil and trust issues which we follow along but unfortunately I wasn’t heavily invested in it.
Perhaps it was truly a funny thing not to realize how broken or damaged you were until someone came along and picked up every single fractured piece and showed you how just being you was enough.
World Building, Atmosphere and Setting
Dawn of the Cursed Queen feels unsettled. You’re not really settling in one place, going from place to place and at times it is hard to follow along and get a feel for it. This made it hard to feel as drawn is as I was with the first two books in the series.
‘The sky no longer held the shimmers of silver. There was nothing but pure open sky, the stars flickering and flashing in celebration of the return of hope and the one true king.’
The Verdict
Whilst I wanted to love Dawn of the Cursed Queen , unfortunately it fell a bit flat for me. Though I suspect this is only the calm before the storm…
